Burnett was working on other projects in parallel with her variety show,she was starred in various movies like the names of Pete 'n' Tillie (1972).When the show ended she focused her attention to more serious roles and gotten away from comic image.Her dramatic role in the TV movie Friendly Fire was a treat to watch.She performed as Beatrice O'Reilly in the movie "Life in the Party:The Story of Beatrice",in which she performed a character of an alcoholic woman who was trying to fight her urges.Other works of her includes The Four Seasons, Annie, Noises Off, and her newest movie "Horton Hears a Who".
She made a guest appearance on spy comedy show Get Smart where she delivered the ever green line 'An invisible wall! Boy, would I like to see that!'.
Burnett kept appearing on stage every now and then,she appeared at The Muny Theater in St. Louis, Missouri in I Do! I Do! with Rock Hudson in 1974.Also eleven years later she acted in a supportive role of Carlotta Campion in the 1985 concert performance of Stephen Sondheim's Follies.
Burnett made regular appearances as a judge on the game show Password,she kept appearing there until early 1980's.She was also have the owner to be the first celebrity appearing on the famous children series Sesame Street in the very first episode of the series.
During the 80's and 90's she made numerous attempts for a new and exciting variety program.She also appeared for a short duration on the skit turned series Mama's Family as her ever lively character of Eunie Higgins.She also collaborated with some other artists and parodied the soup Falcon Crest,co-starring with Dabney Coleman, Charles Grodin, Teri Garr and Gregory Harrison.
Burnett made her come back to the TV in he mid 1990's in a supporting role on the comedy series Mad About You where she performed the character of Theresa Stemple,mother of main character Jamie Buchman (Helen Hunt)
Burnett has been a fan of the soup All My Children.She desires were fulfilled when Agnes Nixon created the role of Verla Grubbs for her.She found herself acting in the character of long lost daughter of Langley Wallingford (Louis Edmonds), and creating problems for her stepmother Phoebe Tyler-Wallingford (Ruth Warrick).
The 25th anniversary special show was hosted by her in 1995.She also appeared briefly on January 5,2005 marking the 35th anniversary of the show in an episode as Verla Grubbs.This scene was shot in General Hospital set of Los Angeles instead of New York City because of some conflicting dates.
