The Rockford Files is an American detective (private investigator) television drama that had its first run on the NBC television network between September 13, 1974 and January 10, 1980 and has been in constant syndication to the present day. The show is notable for the quality of its writing (mainly from Stephen J. Cannell, Juanita Bartlett, and David Chase), the easy charm and charisma of James Garner, who starred as Jim Rockford, and an agile Pontiac Firebird.

The show was created by Roy Huggins and Stephen J. Cannell. Huggins had produced the television show Maverick, which had also starred Garner, from 1957 to 1962, and wanted to try and recapture that magic in a "modern day" detective setting. He teamed with Cannell, who had written for Jack Webb productions such as Adam-12 and Chase (1973–74, NBC), to create Rockford. The show was credited as "A Public Arts / Roy Huggins Production in association with Cherokee Productions and Universal Studios" (later NBC Universal). Cherokee was the name of Garner's own company, which he ran with partner Meta Rosenberg and Juanita Bartlett, who doubled as story editor during most of Rockford's run.

The series' memorable theme by composers Mike Post and Pete Carpenter received Top 40 radio airplay, went to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100, stayed 44 weeks on the charts, and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.

The Rockford Files " Another Drama Series to Consider Watching

Here’s another American drama series that you may want to consider watching. It could be quite old but you will definitely be able to find a lot to learn from this investigator type of drama series - The Rockford Files.

This TV drama series was aired in NBC in between the dates September 13, 1974 up to January 10, 1980. It actually remains to be syndicated at present and the show is starred by James Garner portraying the role of Jim Rockford as a private investigator based in Los Angeles.

This particular show is the creations of Stephen J. Cannell and Roy Huggins. The origin of the series has to do with the previous work relationship of Huggins and Garner in a different TV show created by Roy Huggins himself, Maverick. As he tries looking for a greater scope in modern day detective stories, he partnered with Stephen J. Cannell and had started writing for Jack Webb productions including Rockford as well as Chase and Adam-12.

Both producers tried formulating a particular main character that is totally different from the usual TV detectives that are being portrayed during that time. Rockford actually had to serve his time in San Quentin Prison in California. This is all because of a very unjust conviction. As per his 5 years stay in prison, he then was granted pardon. From then he had to take a job as a private investigator living in a mobile home near the beaches in Malibu, California.

Every particular episode starts with a cold opening of a particular phone answering machine having to record what other people will be calling about. This is more often made by a particular client who keeps on giving excuses regarding paying Rockford's rate which is about $200 on a daily basis including certain expenses.

The early episodes of The Rockford Files during its first season had to concentrate on the trailer where Rockford lives in which is situated in a highway not that far from the ocean. In its TV series from the year 1994 to 1999, he still lives in a trailer but then it is now a little bit bigger due to remodeling.
