American television variety and sketch sitcom featuring exciting skits,comedy with a slight touch of music and stage entertainment offering a variety of short acts by none other than marvelous Carol Burnett,along with her enthusiastic team which includes many guest appearances now and then.The Carol Burnett Show lasted for eleven straight years on the Columbia Broadcasting System and was a highlight of the Saturday night lineup making the weekend far more enjoyable.
The permanent cast members of Carol included Lyle Waggoner (1967-1974),Vicki Lawrence,Harvey Korman and Tim Conway (making his way to the show as a guest star and then got permanent in 1975).The whole show was well formatted,combining the lively energy of the performers with their spontaneous actions.It consist of interactive question and answer session with the audience,the show has the benefit of tapings twice a week.Burnett skills were all set free as she delivered her best as a host,singer,actress and a comedian every week.Apart from the hilarious comedy and musical acts,show was best known for its movies converted to funny skits.Such parodies include "Went with the Wind" and "From Here to Maternity".The one of the best and most popular act was "The Family Sketch,"this portrays a working class family which are usually indulged in monopoly issues.This act combines the humor and the drama to a perfect level.The skit was later produced as a full time TV series called Mama's Family(1983-1990) featuring Lawrence.In order to give more attention to other projects Burnett ended the show on 1978,the show was repeatedly broadcast for many years after-wards.Attempts were made to bring back the show once in 1979 by NBC as Carol and Company and second time as The Carol Burnett Show in 1991 but neither of the attempts were success full.
The Carol Burnett Show was nominated for numerous Emmy Awards every year while it was on air and manage to get more than 20 Emmys in total as well as 8 Golden Globes.Time Magazine compiled a list of 100 best shows of all times and placed The Carol Burnett among the top 100.The Carol Burnett show is one of the most popular and most reputed variety shows ever earning 25 Emmy Awards,8 Golden Globes and 3 People's Choice.The show runs consecutive 11 years successfully making it one of the best in history.
