The Practice is an American legal drama created by David E. Kelley centering on the partners and associates at a Boston law firm. The show won the Emmy in 1998 and 1999 for Best Drama Series, and spawned the spin-off series Boston Legal, which began airing in the fall of 2004 and deals with similar subject matter, though often taking a lighter, more character-oriented approach.

The Practice focused on the law firm of Robert Donnell and Associates (later becoming Donnell, Young, Dole & Frutt, and ultimately Young, Frutt & Berluti). Plots typically featured the firm's involvement in various high-profile criminal and civil cases that often mirror current events. There are a number of crossovers with other David E. Kelley shows, including Boston Public, Ally McBeal, and the short-lived medical drama Gideon's Crossing. The Practice is one of David E. Kelley's more serious-themed shows, lacking much of the comedic breaks found in McBeal, Boston Legal, and others.

In its first season, the show starred Dylan McDermott, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim and Kelli Williams. By episode two of season one, Michael Badalucco joined the cast as Jimmy Berluti. Later, during the same season, Lara Flynn Boyle joined the cast as district attorney Helen Gamble, a role she played for six seasons.

By the end of the seventh season, faced with sagging ratings, ABC conditioned the show's renewal on a drastic budget reduction. As a result, six cast members were fired: Dylan McDermott, Kelli Williams, Lara Flynn Boyle, Chyler Leigh, Marla Sokoloff, and Lisa Gay Hamilton. The addition of James Spader and Rhona Mitra to the cast for the eighth season somewhat revived the ratings; Spader went on to win an Emmy for his appearance. However, on March 11, 2004, ABC announced that The Practice would not return for a ninth season; rather, Kelley would create a new spin-off series Boston Legal, starring Spader, Mitra, and William Shatner.

The Practice " Another Legal Drama Series to Consider

Those who would like to go back to the days when American legal dramas were very famous may want to consider watching The Practice. This drama series which is created by David E. Kelley focuses on the Boston law firm setting which consists of its partners and associates. The drama has been running for 8 seasons from the year 1997 " 2004. This drama series was able to obtain Emmy awards in the year 1998 and the next year for being the Best Drama Series.

The drama series merely focuses on the law firm owned by Robert Donnell and Associates. The plots were in a typical manner featured how the firm goy involved with a variety of cases including civil cases and criminal cases which more often are related to the events that happen in the current times.

There are conflicts which involves the morality of people as well as any recurring theme. Kelley claims that the drama series is somewhat like a rebuttal to the well known L.A. Law which he also wrote. It idealized how law is being treated in the basis of the legal proceeding done through the American legal system.

The drama began with Atty. Bobby Donnell having to employ the following associate attorneys Eugene Young, Lindsay Dole, Ellenor Frutt and Rebecca Washington. They all have their respective roles in The Practice. In its 2nd episode a friend of Bobby’s named Jimmy Berluti was then hired to be an associate. He’s an attorney who works as a loan officer. This character was a big jump for Bobby’s career because as Jimmy tries falsifying documents just to help Bobby with his troubled practices, Jimmy actually loses his job, so Bobby then gets to hire him.

Then on, Bobby now has this idealistic type of dream where his job is to protect those who are innocent. However, as the firm was on its way to financial issues, Bobby then learned quickly that guilty clients as well a drug dealers is what actually keeps the business law firm at its stable financial state.

Bobby then was able to take over the firm where Lindsay tries motivating him to name the others as partners. Because of this, tension came up in the firm including that of Bobby and Jimmy because of Jimmy not being named as one of the partners.
