Family Matters is an American sitcom about a middle-class family living in Chicago. The series aired from September 22, 1989 to May 9, 1997 on ABC and moved to CBS on September 19, 1997 to July 17, 1998.

The show, a spin-off of Perfect Strangers, originally focused on the character of Carl Winslow and his family: wife Harriette Winslow, rebellious son Eddie Winslow, intelligent daughter Laura Winslow, and youngest child Judy Winslow. The family had opened their home to Carl's street-wise mother Estelle Winslow as well as Harriette's sister Rachel Crawford and her son Richie Crawford after the death of Rachel's husband. The Winslows' nerdy next-door neighbor Steve Urkel was introduced midway through the first season, and quickly became the focus of the show. It was part of ABC's TGIF from 1989 until 1997 before it became part of the CBS Block Party lineup from 1997 until 1998.

Having aired for 215 episodes, Family Matters is the second-longest running U.S. comedy with a predominantly African-American cast, surpassed only by The Jeffersons.

An American sitcom named family matters is based on middle-class African-American family residing in Chicago this show runs on a national television for nine years. The series revolves around the Winslow family and involves stories of complete strangers .[1] In the mid of the first season, nerdy neighbor of Winslows a character named Steve Urkel (played by Jaleel white) was introduced, this character instantly got attention and became a main character of the sitcom.[2] on ABC first season of this sitcom Family Matters started airing from 22nd September, 1989 to 19th September, 1997 and after 8 years from 19th September, 1997 to 17th July, 1998 on CBS.

After Jefferson’s Family Matters became the second-longest-running U.S. sitcom with a greater African-American cast on completing 215 episodes.[3]

History

The character of Carl Winslow and his family were the main focus of Family Matters. The family includes wife Harriett Winslow, intelligent daughter Laura, son Eddie Winslow Winslow, youngest child Judy Winslow (up to Season 4), Carl Winslow’s sister-in-law Rachel Crawford and her son Richie Crawford.[4]

In the starting episode, the family had also welcomed Harriett’s sister, Estelle Winslow Carl's street-wise mother (also called "Mother Winslow"), after the death of Rachel's husband earlier to the start of the series Rachel Crawford and her son, Richie Crawford also belonged to this family.

Steve Urkel nerdy neighbor of The Winslow’s, was introduced in the mid of the first season and quickly gathered the main focus of the show.[5] Family Matters was the part of ABC's TGIF lineup from the year 1989 until 1997, after that it became a part of CBS Block from the year 1997 until 1998. Family Matters was produced in association with Lorimar television (1989-1993) and later Warner Bros Television (1993-1998) by Bickley-Warren Productions and Miller-Boyett Productions.

Nerdy Urkel began to become the center of the show as Family Matters progressed and his original characters also played by Jaleel White.

Network alter

CBS bought Family Matters and step by step in early 1997 from ABC slowly for $40 million.[6] Miller-Boyett Productions was promised by ABC to pay $1.5 million per episode for ninth and tenth season of the sitcom. Yet tensions between Disney which is the parent company of ABC and Miller-Boyett Productions started rising. Miller-Boyett Productions saw no future with Disney, so in turn this production house accepted the $40 million offer from CBS for both step by step and Family Matters for a 22-episode season on CBS.

Family Matters and Step By Step were made a part of the new Friday line-up known as "CBS Block Party" by CBS. "CBS Block Party" was put against ABC's TGIF lineup by CBS, from where these two series originated. Family Matters and Step By Step were cancelled by CBS just after one season, along with the other "CBS Block Party" shows.
