Collection of Carol Burnett's Costumes

The National Museum of American History collects costumes used by legendry Carol Burnett. Recently Stage and TV Star comedienne Burnett and designer Bob Mackie donated a costume from her 1970s American comedy show to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The donation was the famous curtain dress which was meant to parody the green-velvet dress which Scarlett O'Hara designed from drapes in the legendry film "Gone with the Wind". This costume was designed by Bob Mackie and worn by Burnett in the comedy sketch "Went with the Wind", which holds immense parody-laden humor.

Bob Mackie is a well-known designer for other stars too, such as Mitzi Gaynor, Cher and Diane Ross, he is an icon of American fashion and popularly known for his glamorous formal women's apparels.

The costume which Bob Mackie designed for "Went with the Wind" speaks so much about his caliber and capabilities. Leading-lady Carol Burnett said about this frock during a sketch which was first aired on "The Carol Burnett Show" on CBS in 1976, "I saw it in a window and I just could not resist it."

This reimagining of Scarlett O'Hara's curtain dress, which was designed by Mackie, speaks volumes on his contribution towards American comedy. Brent D. Glass, Director of the museum says, "It was Bob Mackie's innovation that created "Went with the Wind"

a rich history in the United States of America."

The day is unforgettable - on November 13, 1976 American audiences watched Carol Burnett descend a staircase in a green velvet dress, similarly as Vivien Leigh had worn in the classic movie over 30 years ago. However, this time, Burnett did so with the drapes of her dress still attached to the brace-plated curtain rods, balanced across her shoulders, and she had a re-fashioned valance as her hat.

The costume is housed in the Division of Music, Sports and Entertainment which is in the Museum's Kennedy Center Honors collection.

Bob Mackie has a great number of credits against his name as a film costume designer, television costume designer, a number movies and has also had a couple of television appearances. He also was an episodic Television Director for "Honey-and-Sis", and episode of The Hanna-Barbera Happy Hour on the NBC studios.
