Jem is an American animated television series that ran from 1985 to 1988 in U.S. first-run syndication. The show is about music company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego, Jem, her band the Holograms, and their adventures.

The series was a joint collaboration by Hasbro, Marvel Comics, and Sunbow Productions, the same team responsible for GI Joe and Transformers. The creator of the series was Christy Marx, who also had been a staff writer for the aforementioned programs. The animation was provided by a Japanese animation studio called Toei Doga (now Toei Animation).

The show was originally designed to appeal to both girls and boys, with a mix of action/adventure, drama, music, and fashion. As the show progressed, the audience gradually became almost entirely girls.

Jem and Hologram as a best animated series

Jem is an American animated television series which is also known as ‘Jem and Holograms’. It ran from 1985 to 1988 and also entered in syndication. The show is actually about Jerrica Benton, the owner of the music company, her singer doppelganger Jem, and her band the Holograms.

The secret of the series is that Jerrica Benton is running Starlight Music and the Starlight Foundation for Girls, which were founded by her late mother Jacqui Benton. In order to run this program she needs money, so she projects ‘The Jem Hologram’. Jem is the alter ego of Jerrica. Jerrica enhances combined effect by the help of holographic computer, known as Synergy, which is bestowed to Jerrica by her father at the time of his passing away. Jerrica brilliantly commands Synergy to project the Jem Hlogram in order to distinguish her feature, clothing, and enabling her to assume the Jem’s role.

The younger sister of Jerrica, Kimber Benton, Keyboardist and main Songwriter for the band, Aja Leith, guitarist, and Shana Elmsford, who plays the synth drums, are the central characters of the band. No one is aware of Jem’s secret identity and the existence of Synergy except the characters of band. It is the effort of Jerrica who handles all matters wisely, including the support of thirteen Starlight Girls who live with her and Holograms, and keeps her two identities separate. Their band wins possession of the Starlight Mansion when they compete in the battle of the Bands; also they got a movie contract.

Misfits and Cohorts are the two rival bands of Holograms. In various episodes of the series The Misfits upstages Jem and Hologram’s latest stunning escapade. Eric Raymond, one half owner of Starlight Music, is continuously encouraging this rivalry because he wants to be its owner again. In the middle of the third season the two groups are shacked-up by the second band consisting of Riot, a lead singer and egotistical, Ashe, a female guitarist and professional con-artist, and Max. At the end all three groups suspend fighting by agreement when one of the most troubled forster girls in Starlight House was claimed by her long lost father found by Jem and the Holograms.
