The Carol Burnett show was a unique combination of dance, music and comedy. Though it was very simple in its structure, it became very popular amongst the television audience. It basically showed the parodies of movies, television and commercials. With its simplicity, it was able to strike a chord amongst the viewers, which helped a lot in building its success story.
Many movies like Gone with the wind were used for the show. One of the regular features of the show was the commercial session, where the parodies of TV commercials used to run a woman craze. The woman was none other than Carol Burnett. A major hit in the show was an episode called The Family. It was so successful that it finally twisted off from the main show and created one of its own. The new show was called Mama's family and starred Vicki Lawrence.
Vicki Lawrence was cast primarily because she resembled a young Carol Burnett. She was the only cast, along with Burnett who was with the show till the end. Tim Conway was only a guest cast till 1975. Despite being a guest star, Conway is remembered even today for his wonderful performances. Another star who made it big with the Carol Burnett show was Harvey Korman. He left the show just before the final season. Other casts of the show were Dick Van Dyke, who replaced Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner who left the show in 1974.
Burnett remained active and in the limelight even after the show ended in 1978. She has starred in movies, had written a Broadway play and still continues her appearances on television. The Carol Burnett show is still popular and sought after by many. The result of this popularity was the release of this show on DVD by Columbia House. You can buy the DVDs of the show from any online store.
CBS Television tried to recapture the magic of the show by running it 1991. However, the original still remained the best and subsequent attempts to air it were not successful. CBS has organized three reunions of the cast of the show in the years 1993, 2001 and 2004.
