Carol Burnett has been around for almost five decades now, entertaining the whole world with her acting prowess. She succeeded Lucille Ball as the Queen of Television Comedy. The title really befits her, as she has been able to stay in the entertainment world for so long, without losing her share of popularity. The world has enjoyed all her delightful performances.
Carol did not have a great childhood. Born to Ina Louise and Joseph Thomas Burnett, she had a traumatic childhood with both the parents being alcoholic. She grew up with her grandmother, whom she fondly remembers even now. She sports an earring on her left year, in remembrance of her grandmother.
After her parents divorced, she moved to an impoverished area near Hollywood with her grandmother, where her love for movies began. Her grandmother used to take her to movies and both of them developed a love for the Golden Age of movies. She had the talent in her and the determination to make it big. She graduated in theater from the University of California, where she had joined to graduate in journalism. In 1954, with her boyfriend Don Saroyan, she decided to make a career out of acting.
She got a break when she was just 22 in The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show. She got her next hit as Buddy Hackett's girlfriend in Stanley. She had a great passion for game shows. She has appeared in Pantomime Quiz regularly. Though she touched millions of hearts through the television, the star in her was brought out by Hollywood. She won a nomination for Tony award for her portrayal of woebegone Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress.
She did many roles, which touched millions of American hearts. One of the roles worth mentioning is that of the charwoman. She received many Emmy awards for bringing life to the characters she portrayed. Spotting the talent in her, Lucille Ball became a friend and mentor. Lucille Ball was Carol's idol while growing up! Though Ball wanted Burnett to perform on her show, Burnett decided to start a show of her own. The Carol Burnett Show, which started in 1967 was a mega hit in the history of television channels.
