She was the only cast member except for Carol herself, who stayed on the show for the entire eleven seasons of The Carol Burnett Show. Lawrence got to be in the Carol Burnett Show beacause of a letter she had sent to Burnett and the producers, with a photofraph of herself that came to resemble Carol a lot (even to this day is this story told coming to become a Hollywood legend. Such was the dramatic ascension to fame and showbiz of Vicki Lawrence). Despite being a newbie on the sets, who proved a point becoming an invaluable part of the show especially after playing many memorable characters, particularly Thelma Harper (Mama) in the repeating "Family" sketches. It was given finality that Lawrence only required a gray blue wig and body padding to change into her Mama. Viewers all over never noticed or cared that there wasn't any make up used to make lawrence look older.
Upon the end of the Carol Burnett Show in 1978, Vicki Lawrence and her husband Al moved to Maui in Hawaii, but shifted to Los Angeles soon after.
It was her excellent portrayal of "Mama", that brought the sitcom, "Mama's Family" to existance. It ran for two seasons from 1983 to 1985 on NBC. It surfaced later on as well from 1986 to 1990. The renewed version was a success story. Lawrence played the part of Mamaw Stewart ( the mother of Robby Ray Stewart and grandmother of Jackson and Miley Stewart in the hit disney series - Hannah Montana)
Vicki now stays in Los Angeles where she lives with her husband and kids. The name Vicki Lawrence always crops up when we're in any discussion o9n Carol Burnett. They go hand in hand.
