Carol Burnett was left by her father at an early age of eight years, was looked after and raised by her grandmother Mabel Eudora White. Mabel took Carol Burnett to her boarding house in Hollywood. Carol Burnett faced the difficult times of her here in the boarding house where her grandmother encouraged her to excel in all fields of life.

Although Carol Burnett started her career in 1955 with a Saturday morning children's program "The Winchell-Mahoney Show", her popularity rose after the television serial, "The Garry Moore Show". It was a daytime variety show telecasted by CBS Network and after its popularity Carol Burnett got offers from CBS Network. She signed $1million exclusive contract for the next 10 years with CBS Network and during this period she appeared in a number of television serials aired by CBS.

According to the contract with CBS, Carol Burnett was given right to produce one season of the serial, "The Carol Burnett Show" as per her choice and she choose the theme variety show for the particular season, although CBS was not in favor of the variety show as theme. During the period, variety show was done by male only and it was the first time, when a variety show was being done by a female. Although the one-hour show was telecasted on prime time, its popularity grow tremendously when it's telecast time was changed to Saturday night 10 pm and since then the number of Carol Burnett fan increases exponentially.
