Carol Burnett's Parody of Scarlet Ohara

Carol Burnett has always been known for her very clever and witty parodies on the "Carol Burnett Show". One of Carol's most famous parodies in television history was her parody of Gone with the Wind. This scene was entitled, "Went with the Wind", Carol dressed as Scarlett Ohara from the film. She wore a dress made from green-velvet which was supposed to parody the curtain-like dress from the same scene. The dress was a creation of the late Bob Mackie and was worn by Carol and managed to create one of the funniest and most memorable scenes ever created. The dress now resides in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History were it is preserved for generations to come. The episode aired on the 13th of November in 1976, many viewers knew instantly as she came down the stairs she was doing a parody of Vivien Leigh's role from the film thirty years prior. The dresses only difference was that is had a curtain rod set across of the back of the shoulders to resemble actual curtains. This scene is a credit to Carol Burnett and her comedic acting skills. Instead of choosing something recent, topical and fresh, Carol selected one of the oldest most classic scenes and recreated it as though it had only just happened. The crowd on set was in total laughter throughout the entire scene as were the viewers of the show at home. Carol Burnett as Scarlett Ohara was a memorable moment in her stellar career in the show business but she humbly attributes the scenes success to the creator of the dress, Bob Mackie, who she believes is the very reason the scene was created. She believes without his creation she would never have thought of the idea and would never have happened. The dress now hangs in the division of music, sports and also entertainment in its own private stand at the Smithsonian and will forever be remembered as the curtain dress. The scene from Gone with the Wind now is a constant reminder of Carol Burnett's parody.
