Zorro, a half-hour Walt Disney Productions TV series based on the well-known Zorro character, premiered October 10, 1957 on ABC. The final network broadcast was June 2, 1959. Seventy-eight episodes were produced, and 4 hour-long specials were aired on the Walt Disney anthology series between October 30, 1960 and April 2, 1961.

For most of its brief run, Zorro's episodes were part of continuing story arcs, each about thirteen episodes long. The first of these chronicles the arrival of Zorro / Diego and his battle of wits with the greedy and cruel local Commandante, Captain Monastario. After Monastario's final defeat, in the second storyline, Zorro must uncover and counter the machinations of the evil Magistrado Galindo, who is part of a plot to rule California. The third story arc concerns the leader of that conspiracy, the shadowy figure of the Eagle, revealed as vain and insecure José Sebastian Varga. Season one concludes with Varga's death.

Zorro DVD complete series on DVDs

Based on the famous character of Zorro, the series aired on ABC on October 10, 1957. It is an action/adventure drama series produced by Walt Disney productions. A total of seventy-eight episodes were produce with 4 hour specials were broadcasted on Walt Disney anthology series in between October 30, 1960 and April 2, 1961. The last network premiere was on June 2, 1959.

Guy Williams played the role of Don Diego de la Vega a former university student who has recently called back by his father from Spain to his ancestral home outside El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles sobre El Rio Porciuncula later cut short as Los Angeles.

On his way home Diego learns of Captain Monasterio’s tyranny and realizes that his father Don Alejandro called him back to help the people fight injustice. Apart from the fact that he had won medals for hi fencing in Spain, he decided that the best possibility is to hide his ability with a sword and to move in a manner of a milquetoast rationally other than a stubborn man of action. Zorro mostly operates at night performing deeds that Diego could never perform.

This setting though upsets his relationship with his father and did not sit that well with Diego himself. In fact Diego relied on his with more often whether with the mask or without it. After some time into the series Diego is seen as a clever thinker, a loyal friend, a respectable personality who is just hopelessly weak at swordplay. Disney’s version expanded the name to Diego de la Vega which in McCulley’s writings was Diego Vega. The singing voice of Diego is provided by Bill Lee of the Mellomen.

George J. Lewis who played the role of Don Alejandro de la Vega is depicted as a hot-tempered ranchero with extreme sense of fair play and morality. He was considered to be the richest man in California on account of his Cattle and Land Holdings which served to make him an influential personality in the community. Finally Don Alejandro comes to know the real identity of his son and is in favor of continuance of Zorro’s work. George J. Lewis also co-starred in Zorro’s Black whip (In which Linda Stirling played a Zorro-like character) and also had a minor role in Ghost of Zorro before he played in the Disney series as Don Alejandro.
