What kind of trouble can a monkey and a trucker get into? This classic series explores just that!

BJ McKay was a good-looking young trucker who traveled around the country in his big red & white rig, with a single companion - his pet chimp, Bear.

B.J. was based in rural Georgia and was confronted by a succession of corrupt local sheriffs - Elroy P. Lobo (who was later given his own series, Lobo); Sgt. Wiley of Winslow County and his two fellow lawmen, Sheriffs Cain and Masters.

The only honest cop B.J. seemed to encounter was the Fox, who spent much of her time trying to trap the crooked local cops.

Tommy was a lady trucker friend and Bullets ran the local hangout, the Country Comfort Truck Stop.

In 1981, B.J. settled down to run a trucking business in Los Angeles called Bear Enterprises. His new adversary was Rutherford T. Grant, a corrupt politician who headed the state Special Crimes Action Team. Grant was a silent partner in TransCal, the largest trucking firm in California and stopped at nothing to stomp out potential competition. Because of Grant's intervention, B.J. found it impossible to get regular truck drivers to work for him and had to settle for a crew of 7 young, beautiful lady truckers, including a pair of identical twins and Grant's daughter, Cindy.

BJ AND THE BEAR DVD complete series with all episodes and seasons on DVDs

In 1979 there was a television show that was released that grabbed North America’s attention. B.J. and the Bear aired until 1981, the show was created by two men Christopher Crowe, and Glen Lawson. The star of the show was Greg Evigan and Claude Akins.

The main character Billie Joe McKay aka BJ was played by Evigan. BJ was a truck driver and drove the notorious red and white Kenworth semi. When on the road he always had his sidekick with him, a pet chimpanzee named Bear. Bear often was seen wearing an old leather football helmet based on the fact that BJ named him after HOF coach Bear Bryant. BJ and the Bear were constantly chased and hounded by Sheriff Lobo played by Akins.

Over the year’s the show expanded and BJ ended up with his own company that he called Bear Trucking. The outfit was based out of Los Angeles; a new villain was created in Rutherford T Grant played by Murray Hamilton. Grant was a corrupt politician that ran the SCAT (Special Crimes Action Team). Grant was constantly out to get BJ and the Bear as he had stake in another competitive trucking company. Grant eventually saw to it that qualified truckers would not go to work for BJ which forces his hand and he ends up hiring beautiful young female truckers. The main female characters were Sherilyn Wolter who played Cindy and was the daughter of Grant and love interest of BJ. Judy Landers also starred in the show playing the character Stacks which coincided with the fact that she was rather large in the chest.

The show was extremely popular over the time that it aired. The story of life on the road for a trucker was well portrayed. The famous tag line “how much trouble can a trucker and a monkey get into” is well known. They find all of the trouble they need on the road from bar fights, to truck stop crime and finding ways to elude the Highway Patrol.
